Baby dies hours after parents appear in court charged with assaulting him

A baby died soon after his parents appeared in court charged with his assault, police have said.

Rifat Mohammed was admitted to an east London hospital on Monday 4 July with critical injuries, prompting doctors to call the police.

He was later transferred to another hospital in central London, where he died at 4.45pm on Tuesday.

Before Rifat’s death, officers had already arrested and charged his parents, Mohammed Miah and Rebeka Nazmin and both appeared in custody at Thames Magistrates' Court earlier on Tuesday.

Mr Miah, 36, from St Leonard's Road, Poplar, was charged with causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent and two counts of child cruelty.

Ms Nazmin, 31, of the same address, was also charged with causing GBH with intent and two counts of child cruelty.

They were remanded to appear at Snaresbrook Crown Court on August 2.

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Homicide and Major Crime Command are investigating and are in discussion with the Crown Prosecution Service about bringing further charges following Rifat's death.
