Baby dies at Cheshire prison as investigation is launched

A baby has died at a Cheshire prison prompting an investigation by the prison service.

The stillbirth of a baby at HMP Styal in Wilmslow, on Thursday, June 18, has been confirmed by the Ministry of Justice.

It is understood neither the woman nor staff at the prison were aware that she was pregnant until she went into labour on the toilet.

It has been reported that the woman had been given paracetamol after complaining of severe stomach pains over the course of several days, Cheshire Live reports.

But when it became clear she was in labour and going to give birth, she was assisted by prison and healthcare staff.

A spokesperson for HM Prison Service told The Guardian : “Our thoughts are with the woman who endured this tragic ordeal.

"She is being fully supported by prison and healthcare staff during this difficult time.”

The prison service will now be investigating the incident.

HMP Styal accommodates around 480 female inmates, and has an on-site mother and baby unit.
