Baby dies 'after putting head into bucket of water and bleach' left in kitchen

A baby has died after they crawled to a bucket of water and bleach and either drowned or breathed in the toxic fumes.

Police are investigating the tragic death of the nine-month-old while an autopsy is being carried out to determine how they died.

They say the baby was either overcome by fumes after crawling into the kitchen of his home in Spain or may even have drowned after putting his head inside the bucket.

A police spokesman said: "Everything indicates that the child was playing near the bucket, where there was a mixture of water with bleach, and either stuck his head in it or was close enough to inhale the toxic vapours," said a police spokesman.

The tragedy happened in the town of Gandia, 50 miles south of Valencia and 90 miles north of Alicante in the early evening.

As soon as the little boy's parents, both Moroccan, realised what had happened, they rushed him to a local health centre.

He was transferred to Gandia hospital because of his serious condition but he died from a cardiorespiratory arrest.

Police say everything points to his death being an unfortunate accident and there were no signs of any injuries on his body.

However, the investigation is also looking at whether there is any negligence on behalf of his parents.
