Baby boy in trolley seat injured after terrifying collapse of supermarket ceiling

A baby was hurt when panels from the ceiling of a busy Asda supermarket collapsed on top of him.

The store in Ashton-under-Lyne was evacuated yesterday (Thursday) after the ceiling partially collapsed near the self-checkout tills.

An eyewitness told the MEN how some of the debris from the collapse landed on a baby in a trolley seat.

She described the scene as "heartbreaking" as the baby's mum screamed in horror at what had happened.

Asda issued an update on the incident today (Friday) confirming that a family were taken to hospital from the scene.

A spokesperson for the supermarket said they were taken "as a precaution" and that they are now "all okay".

The fire service also confirmed a woman and two children were taken to hospital. It is understood they have since been discharged.

It has not yet been confirmed what caused the collapse, but Asda said they were working with authorities while investigations were underway.

The supermarket reopened as normal this morning.

Describing the scenes yesterday, an eyewitness - a 34-year-old woman - said: "The aluminium panels landed on the baby in the seat on the trolley. The baby boy was around four weeks old.

"They have taken the baby to hospital. Asda staff put a cold compress on his head and was making up a bottle. I advised not to feed him or to keep the compress on longer than two to five minutes at a time.

"I was with my daughter. That woman's screams were heartbreaking."

Paul Bowers, who was also in the shop at the time that the ceiling collapsed, said: "I was walking round and I went down one of the aisles and heard this big bang.

"They were calling out to everyone to go to the checkout so I went over to see if anyone was hurt.

"Someone told me that a woman with a pram was right underneath it and managed to get away at the last second.

"I thought something was kicking off when I first heard it. Next thing there was loads of dust everywhere. They told everyone to stop shopping and leave the building."

In a statement, an ASDA spokesperson said: ‘"A small section of the ceiling in our Ashton under Lyne store collapsed yesterday evening.

"Following the incident a family was taken to hospital as a precaution and we are pleased to hear they are all ok.

"The store reopened as normal this morning and we are continuing to work with the relevant authorities on this matter."
