Baby boy fighting for life after plunging 50ft from window of second floor flat

A baby boy is fighting for his life after plunging 50ft from the window of a second floor YMCA flat and suffering a serious head injury.

The family's neighbour claims the one-year-old tot "accidentally fell from a broken window" at the apartment block in Birmingham, West Mids, shortly before 7.30pm on Friday.

The youngster was in a critical condition in hospital with a serious head injury, said West Midlands Police, which has launched an investigation into how the baby came to fall from the building in Erdington.

A witness heard a woman screaming as the incident unfolded at the Vineyard, which has 34 flats for young people in need of affordable housing.

And the neighbour said the boy's parents have not been allowed back inside their home amid ongoing investigations by police and the YMCA, BirminghamLive reported.

The baby is believed to have fallen on a narrow pathway between the building and the railway embankment.

A small piece of clothing lay on the floor, surrounded by green fasteners from first aid kits used by the ambulance crew to treat the injured baby.

A witness said: “I didn’t see it happen, but I heard screaming from a woman.

“There were so many cops and ambulance people here, it was gut wrenching.

“I heard from other residents here that there was another young kid inside when it happened, I’m praying the child is going to be okay.”

Witnesses had said the child fell from the third floor, but a YMCA spokesperson said the child fell from the second floor.

Paramedics from West Midlands Ambulance Service rushed the victim to hospital on blue lights and sirens in a critical condition.

A cordon was last night placed around the rear of the property, where residential rooms look out onto a railway line.

The cordon remained in place on Saturday.

Residents said police went door to door asking for information about the incident and the family.

A resident said: "I heard so many police sirens. Then the police were knocking around everybody's door, two, three times. This was before 9pm last night.

"They asked me how was number XX, how well do I know them. I said the husband is normal, chirpy, we say hello usually when we see each other. It's a husband, wife and two kids - they have a little toddler.

"This morning I just heard people marching up and down outside the flat.

"I don't even want to know about it because it just breaks my heart. It's so sad."

West Midlands Police said in a statement: “We are investigating after a child fell from the window of a flat on Reservoir Road, Erdington just before 7.30pm last night (Friday 10 July).

“The one-year-old child was taken to hospital with a serious head injury, where he remains today (Saturday 11 July), as enquiries continue into how he came about his injuries.

A spokesperson for YMCA Heart of England said: "We are aware of the incident that took place last night at a YMCA Heart of England housing scheme, The Vineyard in Erdington, Birmingham, where a child fell from a window of a second floor flat.

"Staff from the YMCA scheme next door attended the scene within minutes and offered our support to the family and everyone involved.

"Our heart goes out to the little boy's family and our thoughts and prayers are with them.

"We are working with the West Midlands Police and will be carrying out our own investigation internally so that we fully understand what has taken place.

"YMCA Heart of England takes health and safety extremely seriously and our residents' safety and welfare is central to everything we do.

"The Vineyard opened in May 2016 and meets or exceeds all relevant safety standards.

"We have a dedicated in-house team supported by external professionals to ensure that all of our properties are maintained to the highest standards.

"We will continue to offer support to the little boy's family and to our staff and other residents who have been affected by this."

A spokeswoman for the YMCA said the neighbour's claim that the boy fell through a broken window would be "thoroughly" investigated.

The Vineyard, a £4.5 million development, has 34 flats for young people in need of affordable and permanent housing, but not additional support, according to its website.

Residents have access to the YMCA's Chris Bryant community centre, which is located next door and opened the same year.

It offers conferencing, sports, events and training facilities for hire, and a coffee shop.
