Baby born without skin who 'died twice' goes home months after mum planned funeral

A baby born without skin has finally left hospital months after his parents were thinking about planning his funeral.

Ja’bari Grey was born on New Year’s Day this year, with skin on only his head and legs.

He was diagnosed with Epidermolysis bullosa, a connective tissue disorder that affects only 20 newborns out of every million in America.

In his fight to survive during the first few weeks of his life, Ja'bari medically passed away twice - with doctors managing to revive and stabilise him each time.

Ja'bari's parents, from Houston, Texas, were told to prepare for the worst, with mum Priscilla revealing she was looking to plan her son's funeral.

Now Priscilla, from Houston, Texas, has said she is "overwhelmed with happiness" after finally bringing 11-month-old Ja'bari home from Texas Children's Hospital.

She said: "Everything is going fine. It's working out a lot better than I expected.

"At three months of age we were planning a funeral - they (medics) gave him no chance, like, at all, and for him to jump that whole hurdle, they were amazed."

When Ja'bari was born weighing just 3lb and missing most of the skin on his body from the neck down.

His eyes were fused shut and his neck was fused to his chest - with his arms, some fingers and toes also fusing together.

Doctors faced a race against time to carry out surgeries to stop further fusion.

Ja'bari's incredible treatment included growing sheets of skin from his own cells at a lab in Boston - a method normally used to treat burn patients.

The tot, whose name means 'brave one' had two major skin graft surgery and another unsuccessful surgery to open his eyes.

While he still needs extra care, Priscilla said she is overjoyed to have her son at home - revealing he is wearing baby clothes for the first time and has even started blowing bubbles.

Priscilla started a GoFundMe page earlier this year after she was told her medical insurance wouldn't cover Ja'bari's transfer to another hospital for more appropriate treatent.

On it, she wrote: "My whole time being pregnant everything was going good then an ultrasound showed that he wasn't gaining weight so they decided to induce me at 37 weeks .

"When I went in the morning to get induced his heart rate was dropping so they end up doing an emergency c section, once they got him out they noticed he was born without his skin his eyes are fused shut which will require surgery to open them.

"He was born at 3 pounds. He is requiring a breathing machine that is breathing for him, he has past away twice and the doctors have brought him back."

"The skin disorder he has is so very rare that no doctor has ever seen it before and is very hard to treat with little to no info at all."

Ja’bari was born at Methodist Children's Hospital via emergency c-section.

Medics there told the heartbroken family there was nothing that could be done for Ja'bari, before they started looking at transferring him to Texas Children’s Hospital.

However, they suffered a further blow when insurers Medicaid denied them a transfer because it was 'out of network' in accordance with their policy.

After campaigning and fundraising from family and friends, Ja'bari made it to Texas Children’s Hospital - where he received his life-saving surgeries.
