Baby baboon a Christmas gift for zoo staff and visitors

Keepers at Adelaide Zoo have shown off a baby hamadryas baboon born at the zoo just over a week ago.

The zoo has not yet determined the gender of the baby, which was born in the early hours of December 7 to parents Chappi and Horus.

The birth happened earlier than expected but the baby is doing well

"Mum already had the baby on her, suckling well, had a good grip," Adelaide Zoo primate keeper Sophie Miller said.

"The baby appears strong and healthy and clinging tightly to mum.

"Chappi is a wonderful and protective mum, only allowing her older sons (Tomkay and Djibouti) to have a look."

Tomkay's third birthday will be celebrated next Monday while Djibouti is one.

"Tomkay is keeping quite a respectful distance from his new younger sibling but little Djibouti, who is used to being the centre of attention, is trying much harder to get a closer look at the baby," Ms Miller said.

Hamadryas baboons are one of five species of baboon found in harsh, dry areas in Africa.

The zoo said up to 800 baboons often live in one area and an "adult male dominates his harem with up to 10 females".

The new baby, which has yet to be named, is on public display at the zoo.

The latest arrival follows a busy couple of months at Adelaide Zoo with the births of meerkats, capybaras, golden lion tamarin twins and a mandrill.
