Babu Jagjivan Ram remembered

Various programmes, bike rallies, and processions were held across the districts of Dharwad, Haveri, Gadag, and Uttar Kannada on Tuesday to mark the 115th birth anniversary of former Deputy Prime Minister of India Babu Jagjivan Ram.

At UAS, Dharwad, speaking at the birth anniversary celebrations, Prof G.B. Nandan said that no sphere of life remained untouched by Jagjivan Ram. He contributed a great deal in framing international labour laws. “Babu Jagjivan Ram had said that India will become resource-rich when the contributions of green revolution would lead to removal of untouchability and equal status was granted to women. Accordingly, this day is celebrated as National Unity Day”, he said. Registrar Shivanand Karale presided over the programme.

At the birth anniversary programme organised by the Dharwad district administration at Karnatak Vidyavardhakh Sangha, Deputy Commissioner Nitesh Patil asked the youth to emulate the ideologies of Dr Jagjeevan Ram and work for the development of the nation  by involving themselves in nation building activities.

Mr. Nitesn Patil said that the credit of India attaining self sufficiency in food production through green revolution should go to Babu Jagjivan Ram. He also called on the members of the backward and oppressed communities to make use of education programme and provide higher education to their children. Education would help them enter the mainstream of the society and also make them part of nation building, he said. Sri Basava Haralayya Swami and others were present.

In Hubballi, members of various organisations, officials and political leaders took turn to garnland the statue of the national leader. A motorcycle rally was also taken out to mark the occasion, before floral tributes were paid at various offices. The speakers recalled the contributions of the great leader and called on the youngsters to follow the ideals of the national leaders like Babu Jagjivan Ram.
