Babies and toddlers set to take part in city's huge climate strike tomorrow at College Green

Parents are being urged to take their babies and toddlers - dressed up  as animals - to College Green on Friday.

Students from around the globe will be ditching their classrooms to make a stand against the climate emergency which threatens our planet's future.

During the demonstration, a special parade just for the little ones is being arranged to celebrate the natural world and to draw attention to the biodiversity losses.

The event is co-organised by Dr Jessica Hope, political ecologist and a Vice-Chancellor’s Research Fellow at the Cabot Institute of the Environment, University of Bristol.

Families have been invited to bring their children – as tigers, bunnies, badgers – to meet at College Green for a morning of fun and games in celebration of our love of the animal kingdom.

Dr Hope said: “We get it so right with our children. The first things they learn about are from the natural world – animals, leaves, stones, feathers, mud. We read them stories about pigs and mice and bears.

"We spend all our spare time in parks. But as we get older, in our society, we are getting more and more detached from the natural world and living in ways that deplete and degrade – new transport infrastructures, energy use, phone upgrades – and this is a reminder to reconnect and reengage so we can turn the tide on extinction.”

The Global Climate Strike, which will take place three days before the UN Climate Summit in New York, is set to see millions of people around the world taking to the streets to march for transformative action to address the climate crisis.

Hundreds of pupils across Bristol will be taking part in the action which has been billed as the biggest ‘school strike for climate’ the city has seen yet.

The Carnival of Creatures event will begin with games at 11 AM, with the parade around College Green setting off at 11.30, followed by a community picnic.
