Defence giant Babcock said it has won a eight-year contract worth £300 million to train new Metropolitan Police recruits.

It comes as Labour and the Tories both vow to spend big on increasing the number of police in the capital.

Police numbers in London have gone down dramatically in recent years in spite of rising knife crime. From 2010 to 2018 London lost 15% of its officers, according to Home Office figures.

The contract is a boost for Babcock which reported an increase in profits for its first half, helped by a £1.2 billion contract won from the Ministry of Defence.

Overall, the company secured around £3.5 billion worth of contracts in the first half and said its combined order book and pipeline grew 10% between March and September, hitting a record £34 billion.

The company expects revenue for the full year of about £4.9 billion and profits between £540 million and £560 million.
