Baaeed defeats Frankie Dettori's mount Palace Pier at Ascot to keep unbeaten record

Frankie Dettori had to settle for a place again as Baaeed won the showdown with his mount Palace Pier.

The top jockey, left frustrated by Stradivarius' tough trip in the Qipco British Champions Day opener, watched Baaeed swoop past him in race four.

Still on he bridle at the two furlong pole, the 2-1 shot motored alongside Palace Pier (6-4f).

Jim Crowley unleashed Baaeed and he galloped on by, as his main market rival battled on gamely.

The winning distance in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes was a neck, with a length-and-a-quarter back to Lady Bowthorpe (40-1) in third.

Baaeed's victory capped a remarkable few months, as he only made his debut in June and has now won all six of his races, rising through the ranks.

"He just keeps on getting better,” Crowley said.

“The ground was just a bit slow for him, I think on quicker ground he’d have picked up a bit better, he was a little bit laboured.

"He’s come a long way in a short space of time and he’s a proper champion.”

Dettori, who bookies feared on the run-up to the meeting, finished third on Stradivarius in the Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup.

He pulled him wide, around the outside of Dylan Browne McMonagle's horse Baron Samedi, approaching the home turn.

“The kid in front did everything he could to get me beat. It was a disgrace,” Dettori fumed.

Winner Trueshan was repeating his 2020 success for Hollie Doyle and Alan King.

Doyle said: “There aren’t many more superlatives I can make up for this horse. He shows how good he is in the way that he races. He’s just unbelievable. A once in a lifetime horse.”

The Qipco British Champions Sprint Stakes saw Will Buick peg another winner back in the jockeys' championship with Creative Force (11-2).

Favourite backers suffered another reverse when Snowfall was below-par behind Eshaada (16-1) in the Qipco British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes.

The short-head scorer made it a double for Crowley and owners Shadwell Estate Company, in the colours of the late Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum.

Winning trainer Roger Varian said: " You could say this one is for Sheikh Hamdan.

"He has been a great supporter of ours through the years. I'm delighted for Sheikha Hissa and the whole Shadwell operation.

"I have been blessed to be a part of it throughout my whole training career."
