BA plane lands in Edinburgh instead of Dusseldorf by mistake

Passengers were left baffled when a British Airways flight to Dusseldorf landed in Edinburgh by mistake.

The flight set off from London City Airport at 7.47am and landed in Scotland at around 9am.

One woman said most of those onboard thought it was a joke when the pilot announced the plane was about to land in Edinburgh.

Sophie Cooke, 24, told the BBC that people were asked to raise their hands if they wanted to go to Dusseldorf.

She said: "The pilot said he had no idea how it had happened.

"He said it had never happened before and that the crew was trying to work out what we could do."

Puzzled passengers voiced their ire on social media, as it emerged the pilot had followed an incorrect flight path.

BA says it is investigating the blunder.

Passenger Peter James-Hamilton wrote: "I have fallen asleep, missed my stop and woken up at the end of the district line before.

"This morning I never expected to wake up from my Dusseldorf bound flight...in Edinburgh!"

Frequent flyer Son Tran tweeted BA to ask: "Can you please explain how can my morning flight taking off from LCY to Düsseldorf (landed) in Edinburgh?

"While an interesting concept, I don't think anyone on board has signed up for this mystery travel lottery..."

Mr Tran then followed up his first tweet with more information about the flight: "This feels like an honest mistake rather than a diversion.

"The crew was convinced of the Edinburgh flight path from the get-go..."

The plane then set off from Edinburgh at 10.30am on its second attempt to reach Düsseldorf.

The airline initially responded: "The flight has been diverted to Edinburgh, we don't have any information as to why at the moment. There is an estimated departure time of 10:30 from Edinburgh to make way to Dusseldorf."

In a later statement BA said: "We are working with WDL Aviation, who operated this flight on behalf of British Airways, to establish why the incorrect flight plan was filed.

"We have apologised to customers for this interruption to their journey and will be contacting them all individually."
