B30m pirated goods seized at famous Chiang Mai market

CHIANG MAI: About 200 police raided the Night Bazaar market in Muang district late Wednesday night and seized about 27,000 pirated products with an estimated combined market value of 30 million baht.

Starting about 10pm, police searched 25 outlets at the most famous shopping centre of the northern province.

Seized products bearing luxury brandnames included shirts, trousers, bags, belts and eyeglasses that had normally been displayed without any concern at the Night Bazaar. The brands included Louis Vuitton, Prada and Gucci.

Directing the raid, Pol Maj Gen Surachate Hakparn, deputy chief of tourist police, said investigagtors would also track down producers, smugglers and online and offline sellers of the pirated products. They would also face assets seizure and legal action under money-laundering laws.

Police arrested 12 people for possession of the pirated products.
