B1m platinum coin to commemorate King's coronation

The Treasury Department will debut a platinum coin to commemorate King Rama X's coronation day, with a precedent-setting price of 1 million baht.

Director-general Amnuay Preemonwong said on Wednesday the department had royal approval for the design of seven commemorative coins, which would be minted only to meet pre-orders.

The platinum coin will be one of coins being produced to mark the historic day.

"It will be the first time Thailand has minted a platinum coin and the price will be the highest, at 1 million baht," Mr Amnuay said.

The total issue of this coin will be capped at 1,000.

The others will be a gold coin (40,000 baht), silver coins of two designs (5,000 baht), bronze coin (3,000 baht), ribbon coin (1,600 baht) and cupronickel coin (20 baht).

Pre-orders would be received at about 10,000 outlets nationwide, including branches of Krungthai Bank, 7-Eleven stores and coin branches of the Treasury Department, Mr Amnuay said.

The Finance Ministry would draw up a ministerial regulation and a royal decree, to be declared in mid-February, and the coins would be delivered after the coronation, he said.
