B&Q opening hours and new rules in place for all re-opened shops

The country's largest DIY chain is back in business after closing all branches in March following lockdown orders.

B&Q has this week reopened 155 stores - allowing customers to pick up essential items and click and collect orders.

Under government guidelines, hardware stores are allowed to remain open during the critical period, but only if they adhere to strict safety measures.

The chain said it's now introduced social distancing measures to safeguard both shoppers and staff - including for those queuing up outside stores.

A B&Q spokesman said: "As an essential retailer, we've watched other essential retailers support social distancing in their stores and are now in a position to follow best practice and re-open a small number of our stores as a trial, while keeping our colleagues and customers safe."

Stores will be open between 8am and 5pm and cashiers will only be accepting card and contactless payments to minimise the risk of coronavirus transmission.

In stores, customers will only be able to purchase products which are available to be taken away on the same day.

What safety measures are now in place?

A B&Q spokesman said it now has two metre floor markers at entrances and inside all stores to help customers keep their distance.

It's also introduced perspex screens at the checkouts.

Services such as kitchen and bathroom design, paint mixing, timber cutting and key cutting have also been suspended.

The store will also only be accepting card and contactless payments.

A B&Q spokesman said: "As an essential retailer, we’ve watched other essential retailers support social distancing in their stores and are now in a position to follow best practice and re-open a small number of our stores as a trial, while keeping our colleagues and customers safe.

"We’re strictly limiting the number of customers in store at any one time, and so customers may need to queue before entering the store.

"To help remind everyone to respect each other’s personal space, we have two metre floor markers throughout these stores and also Perspex screens at the checkouts."
