B&M has warned shoppers against a scam competition claiming to be the retailer, offering a free LCD TV.
The bargain store shared an update on its social media pages last night, announcing that despite the page “using our logo, name and pictures” the competition was fake.
According to B&M , the competition for an LCD TV has no affiliation with the brand, or its current legitimate competition which is offering customers the chance to win a case of VK Toasted Marshmallow.
In a post on Facebook, B&M wrote: “#COMPETITION update. We've received a few messages from some of our followers with information about an "LCD TV Competition" which has been popping up on Facebook.
“Unfortunately, this competition has NO affiliation with B&M - even though the page is using our logo, name and pictures.
“We'd kindly ask, if you see the page, to report it as a scam to Facebook and help to remove the account.
“Furthermore, we'd never contact followers on any page other than this one; we'd never ask for personal details via any website, and all communication is carried out via the winners and our official competition email address (ending in @bmstores.co.uk)
“Thanks for your understanding, good luck in tonight's competition, and we appreciate all of your support and patience!”
Beneath the post, several shoppers claimed to have received messages from the fake page, encouraging them to share contact details in order to enter the competition.
One person wrote: “I had one earlier saying I’d won £25 with B&M then they asked for my bank details no way”.
Another said: “I received a friend request from bm stores and said I've won the £25 voucher to spend in b+m but the sight to claim directed me to a movie site to register for free??”.
Others said they thought scam pages were becoming more and more common on Facebook, but that many people still fall for them.
One person said: “I’ve seen it and reported it. What bugs me is that there are people out there who don’t realise to look for the blue tick next to the name so then fall for the scam.
“God knows it’d be lovely to win a huge tv but very much doubt major businesses like yourself could take such a huge dip in costs giving away things like that. I hope it gets taken down soon”.
A second added: “I think it's about time that Facebook needs to clamp down on scams etc”.
A third said: “Sick of telling people on FB about most FAKE competitions. Like banging me head against a wall.”
