B&M, Asda and Tesco spark bemusement selling chocolate eggs 100 days before Easter

Despite the fact that we are only less than a week into January, supermarket retailers wasted no time in filling their shelves with stocks of Easter chocolate eggs and bunnies.

Big names such as Tesco and Asda began selling chocolate eggs and packets of mini eggs even before the start of 2022, as shoppers reported Easter snacks in stock, days after Christmas.

Additionally, B&M joined the Easter hype by launching their newest food item, After Eight Mini Eggs last week, as reported by The Daily Record.

Shoppers expressed their disbelief on Twitter, as many were confused as to why Easter themed chocolate treats have hit stores sooner than expected.

BBC Digital Editor, Chris Kelly, jokingly pointed out how long we actually have until the Easter celebration.

He wrote on Twitter: “Hey supermarkets, how many days until Easter. That's right - 101. Displays a bit early?”

Another Twitter user, Ami Louise, tweeted: “It’s 5th of jan, I’ve not even fully gone through minced pie withdraw yet, and the supermarkets are stocking Easter eggs!!!! This is not ok.”

Twitter user, Andy Brown, tweeted his dismay about the lack of products’ supply in supermarkets post- Christmas.

He tweeted: “When is Easter? Unbelievable Jeff. Supermarket shelves are almost empty post Christmas but it's alright with plenty of Easter eggs.”

A fourth user, Jeff Newton, tweeted: “Not even twelfth night and my local supermarket is already full of Easter eggs ! Far too early. I'm still on the brandy butter (but only because it's half price.)”

A fifth user, @MosbyNicki, tweeted their frustration about the early promotion of chocolate eggs, and of course, an Easter pun had to be used too.

“Eggs-tremely early! Chocolate eggs are filling supermarket shelves already - nearly four MONTHS before Easter #CheckTheSellByDateFace”

Clearly, from the high volume of responses from people all over the city, it seems that many are simply unimpressed.

Perhaps we should just look on the bright side- we have more time to devour more chocolate.

Especially if you’re a part of the Crème Egg fan club, it might be worth celebrating that there are also three more months to devour them without any judgement.
