B-52's announce farewell tour with just four UK dates - with one in Gateshead

The B-52's have announced a farewell tour with just four UK dates - including one at Gateshead's Sage.

And the North East date is a homecoming - of sorts - for singer and keyboard player Kate Pierson, who used to work behind the bar at a Wallsend pub , as she ran out of cash while travelling around Europe during the early 1970s.

It's been more than 40 years since the B-52's formed in Athens, Georgia. Since then, they achieved superstar status in the 1980s, producing hits like Rock Lobster and Love Shack.

They've sold more than 20 million albums around the world, were nominated for a Grammy and have influenced scores of acts since.

The band will play Sage Gateshead on Saturday, June 29.

In a 1980s interview with Smash Hits, Kate opened up about her six months working behind the bar of the Anson pub in Wallsend.

She said: "I was a barmaid in Newcastle. I just wound up there with no money and that was the only job I could get.".

The pub had a photo of Kate on its wall in the 1980s, as their former barmaid achieved world wide fame.

Tickets for the B-52's farewell tour go on sale at 9am on Friday, March 28 and will be available through Ticketmaster, here .
