AZ Alkmaar vs Manchester United prediction ahead of Europa League clash

AZ Alkmaar are on a roll, Manchester United are not.

The Dutch side have won four of their last five games, are unbeaten at home and kicked off their Europa League campaign with a credible 2-2 draw at Partizan where they played with 10 men for more than an hour.

United have drawn two and lost one of their last three and needed a 73rd minute Mason Greenwood strike to open their Europa League campaign with a narrow win over Astana.

So what odds are on a United win in tonight's early kick-off in Holland (5.55pm)? We asked the Manchester Evening News' Richard Fay for his verdict.

Recommended Bets

Over 4.5 cards 21/20

Under 2.5 goals 4/5

Win, lose or draw?

Win. Thepools.com make United 5/4 to claim their second successive group win and I think they will.

AZ are currently unable to host matches at their usual AFAS Stadium home after the roof of the venue partially collapsed in August due to high winds, so tonight’s fixture is being held at the Cars Jeans Stadium in The Hague.

That's 50 miles from Alkmaar, lessening home advantage, and has an artificial surface.

Who's a good bet for first scorer?

Mason Greenwood. He is in fine form, and will likely be first choice striker for much of the Europa League campaign. 5/1 is also a solid price for him to open the scoring while he is 15/8 to score at any time .

Who's on the naughty step (first card)?

Nemanja Matic. Thepools.com have pitched their cards market high, Over 4.5 cards which is 21/20 , largely because Lithuanian referee Gediminas Mazeika has showed 12 yellows and three reds in two European assignments already this season!

Who's on pens?

Marcus Rashford. He's 9/2 first scorer and 13/8 any time .

Will United keep a clean sheet?

Yes.  Manchester United haven’t seen more than two goals in a Europa League match since February 2017, averaging just 1.55 goals per game since then. Only one of their last EIGHT matches has gone over 2.5 goals - and even then only just with two goals in the last minute against Crystal Palace. Under 2.5 goals is a strong 4/5 call.
