AZ Alkmaar in squad bombshell as Celtic Europa League foes drop transfer linked captain days before Parkhead clash

Transfer speculation surrounds AZ captain and talisman Teun Koopmeiners for the visit to Celtic on Wednesday night – after he was sensationally dropped for his club's league opener.

Koopmeiners is only 23 but has quickly ascended to the role of captain in Alkmaar.

And despite selling £35m worth of talent in this window he's the main man manager Pascal Jansen would not want to lose.

The midfielder has been linked to Arsenal, Atalanta, Roma and Rennes so far this summer and is in high demand.

Capped for the Dutch national side, he's ready for the next step and has been surprisingly benched by AZ as they face RKC Waalwijk in their Eredivisie opener.

It could be a huge blow just four days out from the Europa League play-off first leg against Ange Postecoglou's Hoops.

Recently, Koopmeiners admitted the stress of sealing his big move was getting to him.

He said last month: "I was hoping it would have gone much more smoothly. There’s a lot on my mind right now.

"This situation is very stressful, because at the end of the day I think about it constantly.”

“If the transfer doesn’t happen before the start to the season I’ll just have to play well and put the most minutes into my legs.

"I know people think I’ve bid the club farewell some time ago, but especially in these times, with the coronavirus and all, a farewell can only take place once the signatures are in place."
