AZ Alkmaar in nightmare Celtic prep as Europa League dream hits tailspin with Atalanta keen on their captain

Celtic’s Euro rivals AZ Alkmaar could lose captain Teun Koopmeiners after the Dutch side already flogged £35 million worth of talent this summer.

The Dutch side have suffered chaotic preparation ahead of their Europa League play off first round trip to Parkhead on Wednesday.

Skipper Koopmeiners was dumped to the bench for the shock 1-0 defeat to newly-promoted Eredivisie side RKC Waalwijk on Saturday.

And with Serie A giants Atalanta poised to make an offer for the Dutch international AZ could be significantly weakened when playing the Hoops.

AZ have already sold Calvin Stengs to Nice, Myron Boadu to Monaco and Marco Bizot to Brest this summer, which has brought in £35 million to the Dutch club.

But manager Pascal Jansens revealed he's drummed into his players just what the European tie means to the club.

He said: "At the moment, Teun is an AZ player and I have to assume he will be with us in Glasgow.

"I don't regret not picking him in the starting line-up. That choice was based on the preparation we made. I know that Teun can bring what is necessary and he tried to do just that when he came on.

"It was definitely a poor start to the season for us. We didn't do enough and it is a sore lesson for us.

"Have too many players left the club? You can draw that conclusion based on this match.

"But we now have an important trip ahead of us to Glasgow and the realisation is there that we can go to the group stage of the Europa League.

"We will have 24 hours of mourning, but don't worry...the boys know exactly what is at stake against Celtic.”

And Koopmeiners himself admits he is unsure whether he will be in Glasgow.

He said: "I have spoken to the manager about me being left out and I understand him and understand his reasons.

"I want to play every game I can. I am a footballer and the matches are always the most fun. I have always had a good time here and I want to give everything for the club as long as I am a player of AZ, however long that is."
