Ayrshire women's cycling festival success as three-day event proves online hit

More than 200 enthusiasts tuned in over three days to view a series of pre-recorded talks, bike maintenance videos and inspiring films during the Ayrshire Women’s Cycling Festival.

The fifth-annual event was organised by The Ayr Active Travel Hub, The Kilmarnock Active Travel Hub and The Trinity Hub in Irvine and for the second year running was held virtually due to ongoing Covid restrictions.

But once again, the overall festival was hailed for its diversity and its mix of topics.

Among the guest speakers was Maybole’s GB Para athlete Kayleigh Haggo, who talked about her career and the benefits of cycling.

Other speakers included Frankie Dewar, who cycled around the UK, and Claire Martin from Scottish Cycling.

Fay Podger, who is who is one of the active travel hub officers, said: “Following the success of last year year’s virtual festival and given that a number of Covid-19 restrictions were still in place, the Ayr and Kilmarnock hubs, along with the Trinity Hub, in Irvine, decided to deliver another online festival over three days rather than try and plan for face to face events.

“This year’s programme was diverse in our topics and the festival was recently called out as an ”Incredible example of diversity” by Sustrans Scotland.

“The programme featured a variety of women with very different experiences and backgrounds to cycling.

“And our live speakers covered everything from cycling and the menopause to world champion races, solo touring, mental health and cycling.

“In addition to our live speakers were a series of pre-recorded talks, bike maintenance videos and lots of inspiring films.”

Fay continued: “We had over 240 participants register for our events over the three days and once again saw attendees join in over the three days from both within Ayrshire and beyond.

“We would like to give a huge thank you to all our amazing and inspiring speakers and to everyone who attended our series of webinars.”

Fay added: “Our continued collaboration between the Ayrshire hubs has provided a greater platform for promoting active travel and behaviour change.

“We look forward to planning our next festival and are excited by the prospect of delivering some face to face activities again.”
