Ayrshire train stations to be cut off as ScotRail confirms no alternative transport following Troon fire

Train stations across Ayrshire will being cut off tomorrow following the fire which devastated Troon yesterday.

Rail operator ScotRail has tonight confirmed it was "unable to secure alternative transport", spelling misery for commuters and holidaymakers.

Passengers attempting to travel between Ayr and Glasgow tomorrow will instead make their own way to Kilwinning, where services will start and terminate.

Bosses at ScotRail tonight said the line would be closed south of Kilwinning "until further notice".

It comes as work begins to assess the damage at Troon, where much of the historic station has been destroyed.

A blaze which broke out in the ticket office shortly before 1pm yesterday took hours to bring under control.

Nobody was injured and although the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, police have confirmed it was not started deliberately.

In a statement, ScotRail said: "The blaze caused extensive damage to the station building on platform one as well as an overhead power cable.

"Because of this, the train operator and Network Rail have closed the line until the structural integrity of the building has been assessed."
