Ayrshire train services face 'significant' disruption due to ScotRail workers strike action

Disruption is expected to Ayrshire train services over the next six weeks as workers take strike action.

ScotRail services running from Ayr to Glasgow and Glasgow to Largs will be impacted as a result of industrial action by the Railway Maritime and Transport workers' union (RMT).

There will be no services at all between Kilmarnock and Glasgow this Sunday, May 9.

Transport bosses are expecting ‘significant’ disruption to services when ticket examiners strike with another five Sundays of action expected.

Customers have been advised to plan ahead before travelling.

The union is going on strike in a “long-running fight for equality and justice over enhanced payments for rest day working”, with ScotRail workers looking to force a 50 per cent increase in overtime payments.

ScotRail say a number of key routes will have the vast majority of their services cancelled, causing a severe impact on customers as the country eases out of lockdown.

For those in Ayrshire heading out for another weekend of beer gardens, restaurants and non-essential shops opening, trains will run on an hourly service.

It will be the second Sunday in a row that has seen strike action on Ayrshire trains.

Last week, ScotRail management and support staff stepped in to cover for ticket examiners in order to keep trains moving.

The train operator is hoping to increase services where possible in the weeks ahead but Sunday services will remain limited during strike action.

Phil Campbell, ScotRail head of customer operations, said: “We will do everything we can to minimise the consequences of this action, but recognise that customers will potentially have to find alternative travel solutions as a result of this strike.”

RMT general secretary Mick Lynch said: “Our action goes ahead on Sunday in this fight for pay justice and equality and the union remains available for talks any time, any place, anywhere.”

The following services WILL run on Sunday, May 9:
