Ayrshire shop becomes fourth to confirm coronavirus outbreak in less than a week

A cash and carry in Ayr has become the fourth shop to confirm a coronavirus outbreak in the town in less than a week.

Booker is at the centre of a track and trace investigation after staff tested positive for Covid-19.

NHS Ayrshire and Arran confirmed the outbreak at the Heathfield Industrial Estate retailer to the Ayrshire Post.

They would not say how many had tested positive but a source told us "several staff are infected and/or in quarantine."

It's the fourth shop to confirm an outbreak in the town in less than a week.

All three of Ayr's biggest stores - Morrisons, Tesco Extra and Asda Ayr - have already confirmed coronavirus cases.

The health board insist the risk to the public remains "low".

Director of Public Health, Joy Tomlinson, said: "NHS Ayrshire & Arran’s Health Protection Team is completing contact tracing associated with a retailer in South Ayrshire.

"Close contacts identified through this process are being advised to self-isolate for 14 days by the Test and Protect Team. The risk to the public is low.

"To respect and maintain patient confidentiality it is not possible to release any further information at this time.

"The symptoms of coronavirus (Covid-19): new persistent cough; high temperature; and / or loss of taste and smell. Anyone who develops any of these symptoms should book a test and self-isolate immediately."
