Ayrshire's first dedicated Crepe Shack to open later this week

Ayrshire's first dedicated Crepe Shack is set to open its doors later this week.

Hoping to capitalise on the region's 'crepe daft' obsession with savoury pancakes, the new venture will launch in Kilmarnock on Friday.

Diners can create their own crepes with a custom sauce, filling, side and drink.

The venture is being operated from the Clansman Bar in the town — where another fast-food business was born around a year ago — Meat in the Middle.

The burger bar chain is fronted by Ross Gilmour and Kevin Borland and the Crepe Shack will be run by their partners, Caithlin Galbraith and Mari Borland.

The pair will be acutely aware of the success Meat in the Middle garnered in 2020 when many businesses struggled to stay afloat during the pandemic.

The business left the Clansman and opened their own premises on Titchfield Street and went on to open franchise locations in Ayr and Falkirk with the ball now rolling for an Irvine venue too.

Crepes, mainly of the cajun variety, have been a favourite with diners in Ayrshire for many years with the dish featuring on almost every restaurant's menu.

Speaking to Ayrshire Live in September last year, Meat in the Middle managing director Ross Gilmour spoke on how Meat in the Middle took off. He said: “It obviously started off in the Clansman Bar and the reception we got from it was unbelievable.

“During lockdown we were running it from the pub and once it opened back up, it can be quite a busy pub, so we couldn’t physically run it from there anymore with the amount of staff and customers.

“So we’ve got our own place now and it’s gone from strength to strength and we’ve just decided to franchise it out because the numbers have just been crazy."

At Crepe Shack, diners can choose from cajun, garlic, pepper, curry or cheese sauce. Fillings include chicken, bacon, onions, peppers, mushrooms, broccoli, haggis, grated cheese, black pudding, or jalapenos. While the sides are fires, curly fries or wedges.
