Ayrshire road closed after huge lorry jackknifes on rural route

An Ayrshire road has been closed this afternoon after a huge lorry jackknifed.

Police have closed the Old Glasgow Road (B769) near Stewarton following the dramatic incident. No serious injuries have been reported.

A huge operation involving a crane is now underway in a bid to reopen the route.

It's understood that the load on the back of the vehicle is a giant stone crushing machine with an estimated weight of around 50 tonnes.

Specialist teams are now working to remove the cargo before trying to shift the lorry.

A source at the scene has been told that the road could remain closed for at least another two hours.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Around 1.35pm on Friday, July 9, officers were called to the Old Glasgow Road area of Stewarton, following a report of a lorry on its side.

"There are no reported serious injuries and recovery is being arranged.”
