Ayrshire residents sent to Edinburgh for Covid tests as sites reach capacity

Ayrshire residents have been sent to Edinburgh for Covid tests as record numbers of positive cases were recorded in Scotland this week.

Sites reaching capacity and staffing shortages meant that those with coronavirus symptoms faced a 120-mile round trip to Scotland's capital city.

On Wednesday afternoon no walk-through or drive-through appointments were available in the region.

People who didn't have the means to get to Edinburgh Airport's drive-through centre faced having to wait for a home testing kit to be sent out.

The Scottish Government told Ayrshire Live that moves are being made to increase capacity and that additional booking appointments have now been added.

Yesterday morning, the availability of test appointments in Ayrshire appeared to improve.

A Scottish Government spokeswoman said: “As we have seen record numbers of cases being reported, we have also had record levels of testing.

"This increase in demand has led to some sites reaching capacity on particular days and individuals have been redirected to other sites.

“It is vital that PCR testing is available for those who need it, and we are working with UK Government to increase our testing capacity and have already added additional booking slots per day across the local and regional testing sites network.

"People can also book a home test kit via NHS inform.”
