Ayrshire residents pay final salute to popular Serbian cafe owner Nino Pajovic

A much-loved cafe boss was given a fitting farewell by the residents of Ayr yesterday.

Serbian Nino Pajovic made his final journey down Newmarket Street in the town where he and wife, Karen, have traded for 11 years.

Nino, who was the self-confessed colourful frontman of his operation, stopped outside the cafe for one last time as customers and residents burst into applause.

His coffin was draped in the colours of the Serbian flag.

The 53-year-old, whose life took in all corners of the globe as a high-flying hospitality figure, eventually settled in Scotland with Karen after their marriage.

He managed Nardinis in Largs before the couple ran Troon's Strawberry Cushion.

And since 2010, they have been at the helm of Cafe le Monde, where hundreds of regulars had come to love Nino's unique style of service and charm.

Mourners at his send-off yesterday included the great and good of Scottish football, who were constants in Nino's cafe.

Former Scotland boss Craig Brown and close pal, Archie Knox, were among those to pay their respects, along with Jim Fleeting, Jim McSherry, Willie McLean, Joe Filippi and Robert Reilly.
