Ayrshire motorists face 13-mile diversion as weekend roadworks hit A77

Ayrshire motorists face a diversion of more than 13 miles due to roadworks which will close a section of the A77 this weekend.

Resurfacing work will take place on the southbound carriageway from Whatriggs overbridge to Craigie Road, Kilmarnock.

The 1.3-mile project will force drivers off the main route through Ayrshire at Bellfield Interchange from 8pm on Friday evening to 6am on Monday, September 2.

The official diversion takes vehicles on to the A71 to the Warrix Interchange at Irvine before travelling south on the A78 coast road, rejoining the A77 at Dutch House roundabout near Monkton.

Scotland TranServ estimate the diversion will add at least 20 minutes to people's journeys.

And that could have an impact on those heading for Prestwick Airport and the ferry terminals at Cairnryan, Wigtownshire.

The works were scheduled for last month but suspended due to the heavy rain which caused flash flooding in East Ayrshire.

Adam Sarwar is Scotland TranServ’s project design lead on the resurfacing works.

He said: “To protect the health and safety of our workers and the travelling public, while minimising the impact of the works on commuters and freight traffic, it will be necessary to implement a full weekend closure of the A77 in this area.

“Scotland TranServ has been working in consultation with local authorities, emergency services and key stakeholders in the planning of this programme.

“In order to complete these works with minimal disruption to commuters and businesses using this busy carriageway, we will work across the weekend.”
