Ayrshire man ordered on programme for domestic abusers after shouting and swearing at partner

A Knockentiber man who admitted abuse towards his partner has been ordered to complete a programme for domestic abusers.

Andrew Oliver was sentenced at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court last week.

The 48-year-old, of Hannah Drive, had pleaded guilty to engaging in a course of behaviour which was abusive towards his partner on various occasions between April 1, 2019 and December 15.

He repeatedly threatened to not pay household bills, shouted and swore, made abusive remarks and referred to the woman in derogatory terms. Oliver also admitted seeking to control the amount of money the woman had access to and behaving in an aggressive manner.

He also admitted behaving in a threatening or abusive manner by shouting, swearing and, on one occasion, punching a wall.

His lawyer said: “There is a record for which he is rightly not proud. He was due to start work in Dubai. That position has subsequently been lost to him.”

Oliver was deemed suitable for the Caledonian programme – a course aimed at rehabilitating offenders of domestic abuse.

Sheriff Michael Higgins said: “It’s my opinion that the public interest would be better served by you undertaking the Caledonian Programme and you’re behaviour being supervised for a considerable period of time.”

Oliver was also ordered to complete 135 hours of unpaid work and placed under supervision for 26 months.
