Ayrshire heritage centre's new project will document life during lockdown

North Ayrshire Council’s Heritage Centre is embarking on a new project to document life during Covid-19.

The centre is looking to record and preserve memories of this significant period so future generations have accurate and personal accounts to better understand life during the pandemic.

The project will cover many aspects of our current lives including work, home schooling, exercise, shopping, how we kept in touch with friends and family, how we celebrated special events and how we kept ourselves entertained.

Your help is needed to grow a collection of:

Physical artefacts that demonstrates life during the pandemic including letters from the Government, face masks, children’s artwork, personal cards, letters, poems and stories

Personal, unique stories - written, video and audio - from residents of all ages that illustrate life during the crisis (these can be kept anonymous)

Digital photographs capturing what our towns looked like during the lockdown

Councillor Louise McPhater (unknown)

Councillor Louise McPhater, cabinet member for participatory democracy, said: “It is important to have first-hand accounts of history, personal stories have a bigger impact than looking back on facts and figures.

“Just think of all the diaries and letters that have survived from history and how invaluable they are.

“This project will allow our future generations to look back on this time and understand the effect that the pandemic had on our everyday life here in North Ayrshire.

“We understand that it may feel too personal to share information right now and so the stories and objects gathered will not be displayed for a very long time without special agreement.”
