Ayrshire greenkeeper continues meteoric rise after landing top role in Sweden

He’s worked on golf’s greatest greens – from Turnberry to Augusta.

Now a Barassie boy is set to tee off a revolution of the sport he loves.

Kerr Rowan heads for Sweden this week to take up a dream post at one of the country’s top courses.

Bosses at Gothenburg’s swanky Hills Club have swooped to make Kerr their new head greenkeeper.

And he’s pledging to put skills honed in Ayrshire to good use at one of the world’s most up-and-coming sites.

Kerr, 34, revealed: “It’s an exciting move for me and the potential is off the scale.

“Golf is an emerging sport in Sweden and they’re throwing a lot of money into making it a success.

“The course where I’m going was built with a view to hosting the Ryder Cup, so I can’t wait to get started.”

Kerr, who has worked at all four of golf’s major tournaments, has enjoyed a meteoric rise since attending greenkeeping college as a student.

He admitted: “I’ve been lucky to work all of the top events as a volunteer and was on the staff at the Masters in 2001 when Tiger Woods won.

“I’m also on the list to come back and work this year’s Ryder Cup at Gleneagles, so it’s a big year for me.”

But Kerr, a diehard fan of Ayr United, admits he’ll miss many of his home comforts when making the big switch.

He confessed: “It wasn’t an easy decision to make.

“I’m having to leave behind a lot of family and friends – and I’ll be relying on my pals to stay in touch with Ayr games!

“I’ve been going to Somerset Park for more than 20 years, so it will be pretty surreal not to do that on a Saturday anymore.

“But this is a huge opportunity and the place I’m going to is termed a ‘super course’ by the Swedes.”

Kerr, who is leaving his role as head greenkeeper at Ranfurly Castle, added: “Chances like this don’t come along very often.”
