Ayrshire golfer breaks Irvine club course record twice

A champion Ayrshire golfer broke the course record at his home club twice in three weeks.

John Shanks first achieved the feat at The Irvine Golf Club on July 24 when he shot a superb scratch score of 64 (seven under par).

The three-times Ayrshire Strokeplay champion then broke his own record on August 15 by carding an incredible nine under par 62.

In between the history-making rounds, the 33-year-old added more silverware to his trophy cabinet by winning the 36-hole Viking Krus competition at Largs.

Shanks, a former Ayrshire Matchplay and Ayrshire Order of Merit champion, insists setting a new course record had long been in his sights.

But he admits it took the best golf of his life – and a fair bit of composure – to realise his ambition.

He said: "I always look at the names on the board in the clubhouse and obviously you want to be up there.

"The course record has been a goal of mine for some time so to get it twice in the space of a couple of weeks was a great feeling.

"I was a bit nervous over the last five holes the second time round. Standing over the final putt, it's fair to say I took my time.

"I was a wee bit shaky but thankfully the ball dropped.

"I would say the last four weeks has been the best I've ever played.

"Hopefully I can keep it up. I've been selected for Ayrshire for the Scottish Area Team championships next month and it would be nice to carry my form into that."

How he did it. . .

July 24: An inward half of 30, which included an eagle three at the 12th hole, contributed to a sensational scratch score of 64.

August 15: A blistering outward half of just 29 shots put Shanks well on course for another record breaking round. He started with birdies at the opening three holes and adding more at the fifth, sixth, eighth and ninth.

Shanks’ inward half of 33 shots included birdies at the 10th, 14th and 19th and he could even afford the luxury of a single bogey five at the 13th as he wrote himself into the history books.
