Ayrshire council reveals plans for re-opening public toilets

North Ayrshire Council has started the phased re-opening of its public toilets as Covid-19 restrictions are eased nationwide.

The facilities were closed in March as lockdown was introduced to combat the spread of Coronavirus.

Now, as Scotland enters the latest stage of the route map out of lockdown, the council is starting to re-open the public toilets which are under its ownership.

The toilets at Pierhead, Gallowgate Street in Largs were the first to re-open on Saturday.

Facilities at the Braes in Saltcoats and Ardrossan South Beach were scheduled to open by today.

And the toilets at Broomfields in Largs; Melbourne Gardens in Saltcoats, and Mackerston in Largs, are expected to re-open by Wednesday, July 15. All of these scheduled openings will be subject to water quality checks.

The toilets at the Pencil and Aubrey Park, Largs, will remain out of use for the immediate future.

North Ayrshire Council say these facilities require significant work to be carried out.

Councillor Jim Montgomerie, Cabinet Member for Green New Deal & Sustainability, said: “We have introduced a number of measures to ensure that the toilets can re-open safely.

“This includes carrying out risk assessments, extensive cleaning, staff training and water testing.

“We would ask users to respect the signage in the toilets to ensure the safety of all users.

“In the meantime, we would like to thank residents for their continued support and adherence to the guidelines – it has not been an easy time but we are gradually coming through this and it’s important that we continue to follow advice to stop the virus from spreading.”
