Ayrshire College students urged to take up offer of Covid testing

Ayrshire College students have urged fellow learners to get tested for coronavirus.

Over 100,000 rapid lateral flow tests have been distributed to colleges across Scotland, with twice-weekly voluntary testing being encouraged.

Students at campuses in Ayr, Kilwinning and Kilmarnock have been taking up the offer to get tested.

For many studying on courses that require them to be on campus, the test kits have given them "reassurance and confidence" that they will be able to stay safe on return to campus.

One student willing to get regular tests in Lee Kershaw who is studying for a City and Guilds Diploma in Bench Joinery.

Lee said: “It has been a difficult year being away from my class-mates and if using these tests means that we can work together again – I am all for it.”

Education bosses have praised the rollout with colleges making tests readily available with easy-to-access systems on campus.

A lateral flow test involves taking a swab from the mouth and nose with results visible inside 30 minutes.

Results can then be uploaded onto the NHS website. The Scottish Government is recommending that two tests are taken each week, ideally three days apart.

Although voluntary, Scotland’s clinical director Jason Leitch is urging all students to take the 30-minute test which could help “break the chains of transmission”.

He said: “The college testing programme is voluntary, and I encourage all eligible staff and students to take part regularly to help protect themselves, and keep their friends, families and colleges safe.”

Ayrshire College student June Lennon, who is studying Food and Beverage, added: “It’s great that we can get these kits directly from the college. It avoids me going to a test centre or a medical centre.

“I hope as many people as possible use them to make it safe to return to college. I am healthy and would feel happy in college, but I worry about bringing any virus to my family.”
