Ayrshire caravan park branded 'a disgrace' after tyres slashed in 26 vehicle vandalism spree

A holiday goer forked out hundreds of pounds to replace three of her tyres after they were slashed in part of a 26 vehicle vandalism spree at an Ayrshire caravan park.

Laura Allan, of Shotts in North Lanarkshire, was staying at Craig Tara Holiday Park last weekend when all three cars in her party were targeted on Sunday evening.

She had to fork out £230.26 to fix three of the tyres on her own car which were damaged.

And she says the customer service at Craig Tara, owned by Haven, was “a disgrace”.

Laura said: “I get they’re not responsible but the way they handled it, just completely washing their hands of it altogether is just a disgrace.”

Laura, who works in customer services herself, said her and the family went to bed at around 10.30pm on Sunday and heard her mum's car alarm going off.

She told Ayrshire Live : “We went and checked and there was nothing there so never thought anything else of it.

“We went back to bed and within five or ten minutes somebody came and chapped the door saying that they had been sitting in their caravan and heard a tyre pop and went out and realised they had a flat tyre.

“We went out to check our mum's and realised she did have a flat tyre.

Laura went over to check her and her sister’s cars and noticed they both had flat tyres too.

After phoning security, the group went back to bed to deal with the situation in the morning as Laura said “security wasn’t coming and we thought there’s nothing we can do at this time of night anyway.”

Those affected by the vandalism were told to head to reception in the morning where they were handed a police incident number.

Laura said: “There was a whole queue of us and they just handed me a yellow sticky note with the police incident number on it and a number for me to call a mobile tyre company to change the tyres.

“Most of us were in private owned caravans and we had to liaise with the owners to see if we could stay longer to get sorted or not, and [reception] said if we can’t stay in the caravan we can sit in the Live Lounge which is their main function room.

“But that was basically the customer service. They just said we’re parking at our own risk so they don’t take any liability.

“I totally understand their terms and conditions and nobody is responsible for this apart from [the culprit] but that’s when they should step up the customer service and they should have offered more than what they’ve offered.

“They never as much as said ‘do you need a cup of tea’ or anything.

“In my eyes, they were expecting us to go up and sit in the Live Lounge and spent more money in their complex while we’re paying to get our cars fixed.

“There needs to be some form of goodwill gesture there.”

Police Scotland said enquiries are ongoing and anyone with information is urged to contact police on 101, quoting incident 4005 of August 8.

A Haven spokesperson said: “Following an unprecedented incident on Sunday evening, there was some criminal damage to some vehicles on our park. The matter was reported to the police who are managing the enquiry and we can’t discuss this in more detail.

“Our team ensured that full support was provided to those affected, arranging for extended stays where necessary at no cost to the holidaymaker, assisting in changing tyres for some guests who were impacted, and supporting guests with crime reference numbers and insurance claims.

“Haven has the health and safety of its guests and team at its heart and has 24 hour security across the park with regular and frequent patrols throughout the night.

“We’d like to apologise for the inconvenience caused to the small number of guests affected by this rare event.”
