Ayrshire business owner says new petrol station plan will 'close him down'

A business owner says a plan to build a petrol station in Ayrshire will "close him down".

Blueprints have been lodged to build a petrol station on the outskirts of New Cumnock.

The filling station, shop and hot food takeaway, would be located on the site of the demolished Tam O’Shanter cafe on the A76.

Ten full-time jobs would be created if it goes ahead.

More than 30 comments have been submitted supporting the bid to East Ayrshire Council saying the new build would be beneficial to the area.

However, the town already has a fuel stop – the New Cumnock Service station.

Boss Ammar Ali said in an objection to the council: “I am a local business and already struggling in these days and times – opening another petrol station will close us down.”

Twenty parking spaces, six petrol pumps and two HGV pumps are part of the new garage proposals laid out in a planning application submitted to the council.

Grove Garages Investments has applied for permission to build the new development.

A design statement submitted to the council as part of the planning process said: “The provision of a new shop and hot food unit within the filling station will provide a convenience without having a detrimental impact on nearby businesses.”

It added: “The proposal will revitalise a vacant site by reinstating its former use, with much-improved facilities. The location is a prominent, accessible site, which will be well used.”

Grove Garages has developed a number of service stations in Glasgow.

East Ayrshire Council knocked back a previous planning application from the firm last year for a filling station on the site but that included a restaurant.

The eaterie has been removed from the latest proposal.
