Ayrshire boxing startlet wins Scottish title on his birthday as club crown trio of champions

Irvine Vineburgh Boxing Club starlet Aaron Connor enjoyed a knockout birthday – by winning a Scottish title on the day he turned 14.

The youngster was crowned the age 2007 50kg champion at Boxing Scotland’s Schools and Junior Championships on Saturday.

He defeated Gary Melville of North Glasgow BC after the judges scored the fight 3-2 in his favour to cap a memorable day.

Aaron, who kept his birthday a secret from coach Alec Mullen, now has three Scottish titles to his name.

Club colleague Mason Salmon, also 14, also struck gold with a terrific victory against Aaron Bennett of Cambusnethan BC in the 48kg final.

Mason went into the fight still feeling the effects of a virus but powered on to claim his fourth Scottish title.

The wins took Vineburgh’s gold tally at the championships to three out of three after 12-year-old Liam Boyd’s win in the 38.5kg category last weekend.

Female fighters Brooke Neely and Brooke Cairns had to sit out the event due to no entries at their weight.

Proud coach Alec said: “There are plenty of clubs out there who haven’t even got one champion to their name so to have three is just fantastic.

“For Aaron to fight on his birthday shows how committed he is. The same goes for Mason who fought when he wasn’t feeling at his best but still managed to get the victory.”

Young boxer Brooke Neely (Irvine Herald)

Brooke Neely is set to cross the Channel to represent Scotland in a Dual International against France on October 30.

The 16-year-old, a two-times British champion, is the youngest member of the Boxing Scotland Elite Boxing Group and splits her time between Irvine Vineburgh and the Boxing Scotland high performance centre in Bridgeton, Glasgow.
