Ayrshire beach to host spectacular sunset concert

Irvine beach is set to host a spectacular sunset concert later this year.

Signal at Dusk  - a captivating, boundary-crossing opera -  will make its UK premiere on the shore between May 21-23.

Tickets go one sale on Monday, March 23 for the event which was created by renowned Dutch artists Strijbos and Van Rijswijk and produced by Cryptic.

And organisers have given music lovers a taste of what to expect with the following description of what is sure to be an unmissable night.

"Roaming one of Scotland’s most beautiful beaches, a cast of Scottish and Dutch performers sing through loudspeakers, creating a siren song to the waves.

"These modern-day mermaids will lure audiences along a kilometre long stretch of Irvine Beach as darkness falls, their ethereal voices like the desolate tones of foghorns and their lights dramatically searching the landscape like lighthouse beacons."

Strijbos and Van Rijswijk said: "Signal at Dusk is an opportunity for people to immerse themselves in the remarkable Irvine beach landscape in an unforgettable way.

"For many, it will be a familiar place, but through music, they will see it in a completely different light, not just because of the sunset.

"This opera gives people space and time to think about their relationship with the natural environment, and also the consequences and questions that are arising given the impact of the current climate crisis, especially along our coast lines.

"We are excited to return to Scotland and work with Cryptic once again on what is set to be a very poignant staging of the work as part of the Year of Coasts and Waters 2020.

Signal at Dusk is not only meant for opera lovers, it is open for everyone to discover and dream.”

Tickets are available online at http://www.cryptic.org.uk/signal

They are priced at £6 for residents in the KA11-KA12 postcode areas.

Other price packages are: £15.00 (full price + transport from Edinburgh: £25.00 / Full price + transport from Glasgow: £20.00) / Concession: £8.00 (Concession price + transport from Edinburgh: £18.00 / Concession price + transport from Glasgow: £13.00)Local residents (KA11 – KA12): £6.00

The work is also presented as an environmental, daytime installation, Signal-on-Sea, featuring a sonic-tapestry of choral voices which all beach users can explore from Thu 21 – Sun 24 May.

Cathie Boyd, Artistic Director of Cryptic said: “Signal at Dusk on Irvine Beach as part of the Year of Coasts & Waters 2020 is a significant highlight for Cryptic.

"We cannot wait until May when we present Strijbos & Van Rijswijk’s stunning work which explores mankind’s eternal interaction with nature and the sea - this operatic odyssey will make for a memorable maritime adventure for all to enjoy.

"Thank you to EventScotland for making this one-of-a-kind work possible.”
