Ayrshire beach car cruiser caught by police driving at 100mph

Police say a car cruiser was caught driving at 100mph in Ayrshire last night.

Cops dished out a variety of fixed penalties and warnings with a few drivers also reported for road traffic offences in relation to a the motoring event held yesterday evening, officials confirmed today.

No arrests were made at the event but 11 conditional offers and four warnings were given out in relation to road traffic offences.

The event dubbed 'May Mayhem' by organisers was thought to be the largest of its kind since the pandemic began in March 2020 and caused gridlock throughout the town.

Chief Inspector Alan Paterson said: "We were aware in advance of the event held at Irvine Beach Park on Sunday, May 30 and an appropriate policing plan was put in place, with a visible police presence in the area throughout.

"No arrests were made. However, a number of people will be reported, were given warning or issued with conditional offers in relation to road traffic offences.

"These include 11 conditional offers and four warnings in relation to speeding offences linked to vehicles attending the event. One driver will be reported after a detection made of a vehicle travelling at 100 mph on the A78.

“Police Scotland’s approach throughout the pandemic has been to engage with the public, explain the legislation and encourage compliance, but our officers will not hesitate to use our enforcement powers as a last resort."
