Ayrshire area dubbed 'bargain postcode' as it is named second cheapest in UK to buy property

An area in East Ayrshire is the second cheapest to buy property in the UK, according to Money.co.uk

The comparison site's list is compiled by postcodes and KA1 5ER is second-only to an area in Peterlee, County Durham.

The postcode takes in Kerrmuir Avenue, Hurlford and it has been named as a 'bargain property postcode', with it costing £51,044 on average to buy there.

It's the only Scottish postcode to appear on the list – with the likes of St Helens, Hull, Liverpool and Swansea all making the list.

Top-ranked 'bargain postcode' AL1 5HA in Peterlee averages at just £41,462 to buy property – 86.84 per cent below the UK average.

A statement from the comparison site said: "Head up to KA1 5ER, Kilmarnock, and make huge savings on a Scottish home.

"Costing a mere £51,044 on average, Kilmarnock houses are surrounded by historical buildings and intriguing architecture, and are only a 35-minute drive away from the vibrant city of Glasgow.

"At 83.8 per cent less than the UK’s average house price, a home in Kilmarnock could see you earning the Glasgow pay-check without paying city prices. Bargain."
