Ayr United to receive £500,000 from Scottish Government's football grants scheme

Ayr United are to receive a £500,000 support package as part of the Scottish government's grant distribution for football.

The Somerset Park side and their Championship counterparts will each receive the Covid funding.

Vice chairman, David Smith, said tonight the money was "very welcome news" that would allow the club to "progress the future strategy with confidence".

It comes as Scottish clubs share in the rescue package which includes loans for top flight clubs and grants distributed elsewhere throughout the game.

Smith told the Ayrshire Post: "It's very welcome news and takes that financial pressure off for the rest of the season.

"We are extremely grateful to be receiving this money and certainly do not take it for granted, coming at a time when many industries are feeling the effects of the pandemic.

"What this allows us to do is look forward and progress the future strategy of the club with confidence."

Clubs in League One will each receive grants of £150,000, while clubs in League Two will be given £100,000 apiece.

Loans of £1.67m each will go to clubs in the Premiership.
