Ayr United target Aaron Drinan has "real chance" of playing part at Ipswich, says Paul Lambert

Ayr United target Aaron Drinan has a "real chance" of playing his part for Ipswich this season, according to Tractor Boys boss Paul Lambert.

The Irishman was a huge hit during a Somerset loan spell from January onwards, with Ayr keen to negotiate a return this term.

But Drinan has hit the ground running at Portman Road with a pre season double against Colchester, before impressing against Tottenham on Saturday.

And Town boss Lambert admits the 22-year-old has thrust himself into the frame.

He told the East Anglian Daily Times: "I’m really happy with him. His work rate is excellent and he’s done really well.

"He’s only a young lad, we have to remember that, and he’s definitely given us food for thought in the way he’s stepped in and shown desire.

"I’m really happy with him and he’s certainly got a chance.

"Let’s see if he can keep it going."

Drinan is in the final year of a three year contract at Ipswich having moved from Waterford in 2018.

He netted twice for Ayr in nine appearances and impressed with his ability to lead the line.

Ayr boss Mark Kerr said: "We’ll keep a close eye on the situation and see how it develops."
