Ayr United striker Jonathan Afolabi targets Ayrshire derby glory as Celtic loan star sets sights on Kilmarnock

Ayr United hitman Jonathan Afolabi wants to start delivering on his huge potential – starting with a starring role in Tuesday night's Ayrshire derby.

The Celtic striker, on loan at Somerset Park this season, bagged his first goal for the Honest Men to seal a point at Arbroath yesterday.

Now the former Southampton kid is targeting a run under new boss Jim Duffy, and hopes to come good on his significant promise as a teenager.

Afolabi, 21, spent three years in the St Mary's Academy setup after a switch from his native Ireland.

And since coming north of the border to Parkhead, he has been farmed out to Dunfermline and Dundee in a bid for more experience.

He'll spend this year trying to catch the eye of Celts with a run of regular games and goals at Somerset and insists the time for talking has stopped.

Afolabi told the Ayrshire Post: "I owe it to myself to prove I'm still capable of doing everything I was doing as a youngster.

"That starts with being on top of your game in training sessions and then taking that into matches.

"I can always improve and that's the whole point of the loans for me, to come out and get that experience.

"In the long run the aim is to impress enough here that I go back to Celtic and give them that decision to make.

"But to do that I need to be scoring goals and that's what I want to do regularly."

Afolabi has endured a stuttering start to his Somerset career with a bit part role from the bench and was sent off in David Hopkin's last match as boss in September.

But yesterday's goal at Gayfield has lit the flame ahead of Tuesday's big derby visit of Killie.

Afolabi added: "I could tell after the first time we played them [Kilmarnock] at their place – when the atmosphere was amazing – that this was a big fixture.

"Hopefully we can get close to a sell out at Somerset on Tuesday and it should be a great game and occasion.

"We have a lot of good players here so we should be aiming high this season and going in with plenty of confidence.

"For me personally, I just need to keep working hard and scoring as many goals as I can to stay in the eyeline and hopefully Tuesday will be a good night."
