Ayr United striker Fraser Bryden tips Somerset strikers to hit goal trail

Fraser Bryden insists Ayr United's strikers are ready to open the floodgates.

The 17-year-old stepped off the bench at Annan on Tuesday night to notch his first goal of the season.

But it remains Ayr's only strike from open play in three Premier Sports Cup group games, with United falling out of the competition before Saturday's trip to St Johnstone.

Head coach Lee Bullen has demanded a more ruthless streak from his side - with more than 50 efforts on goal in the three games yielding only Bryden's strike at Annan.

And the young striker reckons they will soon sharpen up their act and come good in front of goal.

He told the Ayrshire Post: "We'd be far more worried if we weren't creating the chances in the first place.

"I think we're playing well enough and you saw that the other night.

"I should have scored with a good chance five minutes before I did and thankfully was able put it right with my goal.

"We know we have to sharpen up and we will. The good thing is we're getting into the right areas and creating the chances in the first place."

Bryden is being hotly tipped for a bright future in the game after bursting on to the Somerset scene at the turn of the year.

And the powerful forward has told how increasing his physical presence will hopefully lead to a big impact in the season ahead.

He said: "You need to be able to handle yourself at Championship level so I've worked hard on my physical side.

"Hopefully I can kick on after my goal on Tuesday and as a team we can head into the league season in good shape.

"The game against St Johnstone is a good test for us because it's Premiership opposition and a chance for us to show the gaffer what we're capable of.

"We can go up there and hopefully put on a good performance which builds the confidence towards that first league game against Arbroath."
