Ayr United progress to knockout stages of Premier Sports Cup after Covid outbreak at Falkirk scraps final group tie

Ayr United will progress to the last 16 of the Premier Sports Cup after being awarded three points in their final group game.

Saturday's scheduled game at home to Falkirk has been axed due to a Covid outbreak among the Bairns squad.

A number of Paul Sheerin's squad returned positive tests yesterday, causing the cancellation of their tie last night at Edinburgh City.

And with a large amount of the Falkirk squad deemed as close contacts of those who have tested positive, the decision has been taken to also forfeit Saturday's game at Ayr.

That means United will finish top of Group E on 10 points and proceed to the knockout stages.

An SPFL spokesman said: “Consistent with previous announcements in respect of similar issues in the group stage of this competition, any club unable or unwilling to field a team in a Premier Sports Cup Round 1 group stage tie, will forfeit the match on the basis of a 3-0 defeat.

"Accordingly, Ayr United have been awarded a 3-0 win in the tie.

We wish the affected players at Falkirk well in their recovery and will continue to liaise with the club in the coming days.”
