Ayr United owner David Smith confident club can make 'right appointment' for new manager

Ayr owner David Smith says the level of interest in the Somerset Park hot seat is giving him confidence for the future.

The United board is currently tasked with finding a successor to Mark Kerr, who left the role on Sunday after 16 months in charge.

But the club has not been short of suitors and Smith believes he and his directors have plenty of options on the table.

He told the Ayrshire Post today: "I'm really pleased with the level of interest shown.

"And I'm confident from what I've seen so far that we will get the right appointment in place to take the club forward."

A string of contenders have been linked with the post, with ex-Morton boss David Hopkin the clear bookies' favourite at 6/4.

Former Rangers defender David Robertson and ex-Dundee boss Jim McIntyre are two to have thrown their hats in the ring, the Ayrshire Post understands.

Academy chief Davie White will lead the team for the crunch Championship clash at Morton on Saturday before Ayr step up their hunt for the new boss.

And Smith said: "The board are absolutely delighted at the way the wider Ayr United family has responded this week.

"The effort from Davie and the guys to step up has been second to none and they have helped to make a difficult situation that little bit easier to handle."
