Ayr United new boy Michael Miller on juggling student life and his new career as a goal machine

Ayr new boy Mikey Miller admits juggling student life with being a goal machine is not all bad.

The midfielder notched a double in Saturday's league curtain raiser against Queen of the South as United got off to a flyer.

And Miller, signed from Raith in the summer, hopes there’s far more to come.

He told the Ayrshire Post: “I’m not really known for my goals so it was great to pop up with two.

“We’ve been working hard on set pieces and when you have the delivery of Joe Chalmers, you’re always going to get good chances.

“Thankfully I took my opportunties when they came and it was an important win for the boys.”

Miller, 25, has seen his promising career interrupted by serious injury after coming through Celtic’s youth system.

A tear of his ACL led to a lengthy spell on the sidelines and Miller turned to education as a backup plan, studying Electrical Engineering at Glasgow Caledonian University.

He revealed: “It’s been a good challenge and something I’ve really enjoyed doing.

“I’m now in my final year and there’s lots of different things to get your head around just now with the online learning because of Covid.

“In a strange way, the restrictions have probably helped me because I can do my uni work from home rather than commuting into lectures.”

He added: “The last few months have been strange for everyone and we’re just delighted to have games back.

“It’s never going to be the same when you don’t have fans in the ground but you try and make the best of it.

“But from a personal point of view, I’m really enjoying it here so far.

“I’m feeling fitter now than ever before and the quality of coaching and training has been really good.

“We’ve got a good quality of squad together and feel we have a chance of going and competing this season.

“The aim is obviously the play-offs and if we can keep the nucleus of the team fit, I don’t see any reason why we can’t achieve that.”
