Ayr United fans 'strongly advised' to stay away from Rugby Park ahead of Monday's Ayrshire derby with Kilmarnock

Ayr United fans have been warned against travelling to Kilmarnock on Monday night as the teams prepare to clash in the season's opening Ayrshire derby.

The fixture will act as the curtain raiser for both teams' Championship season, with the game to be screened live on BBC Scotland.

But with tickets restricted purely to home fans, security chiefs have now moved to advise against any travel from visiting supporters.

In a statement released this lunchtime, bosses at Somerset Park said: "Ayr United F.C., Kilmarnock F.C. and Police Scotland strongly advise Ayr United supporters not to travel to Rugby Park, as they will not be permitted entry to the Stadium and will be turned away by Police and Stewards."

Just 3,692 briefs have been made available - all to Kilmarnock season ticket holders for the hotly anticipated clash.

It will be the first time both sides have met on league duty for 28 years following Kilmarnock's relegation from the Premiership.

Bookies make Kilmarnock odds on favourites to kick off with a win, but David Hopkin's Ayr go into the match having topped their Premier Sports Cup group without conceding a goal.
